Ramblings about death, sculptural soap, and going on a weekend trip
As you already know by now, whenever I put my children to bed I either read for them or I do a meditation with them. We just read the wild robot, and it was really interesting. There is a part in the book where a really cold winter hits. And a lot of animals die. Peter Brown (the author) talks about how the robot pulls things out of the snow, only to realize that they are dead animals. Reading these chapters about all the dead frozen, animals that were not moving anymore really “lit me up”. First I wanted to skip the chapter, or try to read it with less details. Then I decided to just read it just as Peter Brown wrote it. The day after reading I kept wondering, why do I feel like I need to hide or protect my children from death?
Death is the most normal part of life. Everything dies at some point, why am I teaching my children that it is something bad? Why am I trying to hide death from them, or not talk about it? So many different thoughts went through my head. I am wondering if, when it comes to talking about death to my children, do I align it with fear? Why am I aligning death with something bad? Isn’t it weird, that it is completely normal to die, but we regard life with such holiness, we put life on a golden throne,
but
(I)
ignore
death…
ignore it so much, that I get triggered while reading a scene about death to my children? To me something feels off here. It’s funny though, because I honestly believe in reincarnation. I believe in a cycle of life. I believe that we have bodies, and we have something else, like our imagination. For example when we sleep, our bodies are still, not moving, yet we can have the craziest dreams. What is that? Why is that?
enough rambling… I don’t have answers to my questions, but it is something that I definitely need to continue dissecting.
Now back to the usual:
This is it:
I love it when things that I use everyday look really nice. For example my water cooker, coffee machine… and now I crossed paths with this soap/soap dish. The soap + soap dish is 45 Euro, so it is expensive for a soap/soap dish. But I honestly think it is the most beautiful soap combination that I have ever seen! It is from a Danish Industrial Designer called: Matias Moellenbach. Look at the color combinations and the form! A true sculpture <3

What healed me this week:
FLOWERS.
My daughter made me a flower for mother’s day, and it looks so beautiful when combined with real flowers, so I make sure to always have fresh flowers on the table.

Kids stuff:
I am going to Geneva this weekend with my children, and these are the essential items that I will pack for them. Better said, the much needed items for the 3 hour train ride…
The most important item is the iPod Nano, and the plug for 2 headphones - since 70% of the trip will be spend listening to music and stories. The rest will be spend playing games and drawing. Usually the items below are enough for a 3 hour train ride up to a 10 hour train ride… well that and a whoooolllle lot of snacks!

as always,
much love
Susan
